Book illustrated with lovely, engraved views, and featuring A New Map of the Great West, drawn by E.F. Beadle and published by Miller, Orton & Mulligan (25 x 14.5"). This map, interesting and infrequently offered, extends from Ohio to the Rocky Mountains, north of the Ohio River and Indian Territory. It shows the large configuration of Nebraska Territory (created in 1854), west of Minnesota and north of Kansas. Kansas extends to the Rocky Mountains and includes the regions allocated to the Arapahos and Cheyenne. The Indian Territory is indicated for the Cherokees. The map has original outline color; red shows railroad detail extending west to Iowa City. The book's publisher states this book "takes a comprehensive view of the whole West. It describes the earlier immigrations to the West, and presents a vivid picture of the modes of traveling, and of the difficulties and danger of the way … The author possesses a rare experience of the West, having visited almost every part of it this side of the Rocky Mountains, to obtain a knowledge of the country, the progress of settlements, and the manners and customs of the people." Written by Jacob Ferris, and published by Miller, Orton and Mulligan, New York. Complete with 352 pages and 12 pages of advertisements. 12mo. Hardbound in original brown cloth, embossed covers with gilt title and decorative vignettes on front and spine.

Map is quite nice with just a few small spots and printer's creases. It has been re-attached to front endpaper. Contents very good with one signature starting. Covers and spine have minor shelf wear and bumping with a little staining or sunning.
