This is an attractive, mid-20th century restrike of Des Barres' stunning view of Manhattan originally published during the American Revolution. Joseph F. W. Des Barres was commissioned by the British Admiralty to survey and prepare a marine atlas of the Atlantic coast of North America. The project took more than 20 years and evolved into The Atlantic Neptune, a compendium of charts, plans, and views and one of the most important cartographic documents of America. This example is printed on strong paper watermarked with the head of Christ, a hand of benediction and the name Lee Hankey. It is finished with hand coloring.
