First edition of this fascinating description of the California Gold Rush. The author states he wrote this book entirely from memory while snowbound in the tiny silver mining village of Kingston, Idaho during the winter of 1887-88. He came to California from New Bedford on the clipper ship America in 1849, arriving in San Francisco on September 20th of that year. Haskins traveled to Sacramento and Placerville, and eventually set up a mining camp at Oregon Ravine, in El Dorado County. The main body of the book is the account of Haskins' travels and mining adventures, followed by an exhaustive, detailed list of 35,000 pioneers. Written by C.W. Haskins, and published for him by Fords, Howard and Hulbert, New York. 501 pp, 8vo. Hardbound in original yellow pictorial cloth covers with decorative gilt title on front and spine.
