This map illustrates the environs of the ancient city of Sparta, the capital of Laconia and the most powerful state of the Peloponnese. The city lies at the northern end of the central Laconian plain, on the west bank of the river Eurotas. The map includes an extensive key to 37 sites as described by Barthelemy. This was published in an imaginary travel journal by Jean Jacques Barthelemy, a historical fiction set in ancient Greece with a title that translates to The Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece.
