This map depicts the strategically important waterway that connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. The map is based on M. Kauffer's map of 1776 adjusted to reflect the ancient geography. The inset of Byzance (present-day Istanbul) is based on the work of General Albancourt and Lafitte Clave (1787). It was published in an imaginary travel journal by Jean Jacques Barthelemy, a historical fiction set in ancient Greece with a title that translates to The Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece.
