An engrossing, small map of the region bounded by the Red Sea in the west and the Malay Peninsula in the east, centered on the Indian Ocean. The map was used to illustrate Vander Aa's edition of the accounts of the Venetian jeweler and traveler Gasparo Balbi. Balbi sailed from Aleppo in 1579, around the coast of India to Pegu in Burma (Myanmar) in the Gulf of Martalban. The map shows his route; it took him four years to reach Burma. The decorative cartouche depicts his meeting with the king of the region.
