1) The Teacher's Guide to Illustration: A Manual to Accompany Holbrook's School Apparatus, (4.5 x 7.5"), Holbrook School Apparatus Co., Hartford, CT, 1856. An educational manual written by F.C. Brownell that was prepared for teachers to aid in developing methods to instruct their pupils on subjects like using an abacus, drawing, geography, astronomy and map drawing. The book is illustrated with numerous copper and wood engravings. There is a small, but very detailed Map of New England taken from Smith's Primary Geography. The map covers the region from Montreal to New York City and features a large ship and a decorative border. The title page is highlighted by a vignette of a teacher's desk covered with globes and other educational tools with a wall map of the United States in the background. 158 pages. 18mo. Hardbound in original illustrated paper covered boards with brown leather spine. Contents are good to very good with an occasional finger mark. Binding is tight. The front endpaper has several ink notations, and a manuscript bookplate. Covers are rubbed and bumped, spine is cracked with some loss.
2) The Encyclopedia of Geography... (4.3 x 6.5"), Thomas T. Smiley, Hartford, 1839. This charming and very informative geography, published in Hartford by Gurdon Robbins, Jr., and in Philadelphia by Grigg & Elliot is profusely illustrated with wood engravings that depict cities, landscapes, geology, vegetation and wildlife, including an example of the dodo bird. Diagrams comparing the lengths of rivers and heights of mountains are included, as are several tables that list the populations of the states and territories of the U.S. and the countries of the world. 264 Pages. 18mo. Hardbound in original paper-covered boards with gilt title on a leather spine - "Smiley's Geography." Contents are lightly foxed, and a previous owner's ink notations are on the title page and endpapers. Covers are worn and soiled, and corners are a bit bumped. Spine and binding are good.
