This pair of very early printed maps illustrates the Eastern Hemisphere - only the borders are different. The circumference and diameter of the earth is shown in Italian and German miles. Throughout his life, Apianus was involved in mathematical publishing, cartography and instrument making. The Cosmographia was among his most popular publications. Each printed on a sheet (6.3 x 8.5") with Latin text with illuminated initials below the map. The verso of one of the maps includes an interesting distance scale devised from the measurement of hands and strides.
