A fine example of Mitchell's famous school atlas with 32 maps (some back to back) along with tables and statistics. Very clean copy with no notations except for a previous owner's name in pencil on inside cover. The U.S. map features the stacked Arizona-New Mexico configuration, huge territories of Utah and Nebraska, and with Washington Territory in the short-lived inverted "L" configuration. The Gold Region in Colorado is noted. Very nice map of Texas. Several of the maps are brightly colored with an interesting combination of hand coloring and overprinting. Hardbound with pictorial paper over boards. Published by E.H. Butler & Co. Very nice example with the "Edition of 1859" on the cover.

Very nice covers show little wear, but with some cracks to leather on spine. A little foxing on the first few pages. About half of the maps are fine with the balance very good. The US map has a small puncture in upper neatline.
