Uncommon miniature map of California as a island, derived from Nicolas Sanson's influential map Audience de Guadalajara, 1657. The major differences between the two maps are the presence here of Destroit d'Anian, differences in the mountain ranges, and the prominence of several cities in the Cibola region including Acoma. This is the third state with the notation at lower right "Nouvelle Espagne ou Mexique" added. Pierre Duval was Nicolas Sanson's nephew and pupil. He published a wide range of atlases and individual maps including the fine miniature world geography that included this map.
