The Atlas Minor was a reduced version of Mercator's great atlas. First published by Jodocus Hondius and Jan Jansson in 1607, it had a long and varied publishing history for more than 100 years with numerous publishers. This lot contains two fine title sheets.

1) Published by Jan Jansson, Amsterdam, 1641 (8 x 6") This decorative sheet is filled with allegorical female figures representing the continents, and geographers measuring a globe that is held on the shoulder of Atlas. Stains in margins and some light soil in the image.

2) Published by Johannes Cloppenburg, Amsterdam, 1630 (10.3 x 7.5") This sheet is patterned off the folio title page for the Mercator Atlas, reduced in format. It is presented in the architectural style centered on Atlas examining the globe. The female personifications of Europa, Peruana, Asia, and Magalanica stand in alcoves flanking the title and Mexicana and Africa sit atop the columns. Trimmed and mounted on a sheet of 18th century paper for a previous rebinding. There are some light damp stains.
