This bird's-eye view illustrates the harbor and fortress of Jijel, Algeria. Originally a Phoenician trading post, the city passed successively to the Romans, the Vandals, the Arabs, the Genoese; in the 16th century it became an Ottoman Corsair stronghold. In July 1664, the French took the city, but lost it in October of the same year. This engraving shows French ships in the harbor and an inset opposite the map key shows the sailing route from Marseille to Gigeri.
