Beautifully rendered drawing showing the two birds on separate branches sharing a meal. "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon" and printed and colored by J.T. Bowen. This is a reduced version of the folio Plate 62, but is virtually identical to the double elephant folio plate. This handsome bird became extinct in 1914. Audubon said of the Passenger Pigeon: "When an individual is seen gliding through the woods and close to the observer, it passes like a thought, and on trying to see it again, the eye searches in vain; the bird is gone." This lot includes original title page from Vol. III.
