This is a copper engraved view of a colonial indigo plantation worked by slaves. It shows the process from gathering, to soaking in large vats, to hanging in covered huts. The indigo plant supplies the important dye that was not synthesized until the 1870's. Originally cultivated in India, it is mentioned in manuscripts as early as the 4th century BC. French text on verso.
