This engraving illustrates the naval Battle of the Sound (Oresund), which took place in 1658 during the Dutch-Swedish War. The Swedish under Charles X had Copenhagen under siege and a Dutch fleet was sent to prevent Sweden from gaining control of both sides of the Sound and monopolizing Baltic trade. The battle resulted in a Dutch victory and the end of the siege of Copenhagen.
