Victor Levasseur's "Atlas National Illustre" and "Atlas Universel Illustre" are among the last decorative atlases published. The maps are all lavishly illustrated with scenes of the countryside, products and activities indigenous to the region.
The decorative border of this map features Adam and Eve seated in a garden, with wild animals, and costumed figures in landscapes within a series of oval vignettes, surrounded by garlands of flowers with fruit. A population chart at right totals 638,550,000 for the entire continent of Asia. It was illustrated by the French painter, Raymond Bonheur.
