This is one of the earliest precise charts of the Gold Coast, present-day Ghana, from the River Ancobar in the west to the Volta in the east. The chart was produced for the French vessels competing with other European powers for the trade in gold. The coast is divided among several small African kingdoms. Numerous depth soundings along the coast are shown, as are coastal towns and forts including St George de la Mine aux Hollandois (Elmina).
