This rare lettersheet is copyright 1854 by James M. Hutchings and was available from Hutchings in Placerville with prepaid envelope. The text is surrounded by eight wood engraved scenes probably from drawings by Charles Nahl, gold rush painter and associate of Hutchings. The scenes are: Burning their Dead; Cooking Food; Grinding Acorns, &c.; Catching Grasshoppers; Gathering Seeds, Mode of Traveling; Gathering Acorns; and An Indian Fandango. The two column text panel is 4.5" x 6" and include such anecdotes as "The women do the work, the men the eating, grumbling and sleeping." This was one of the more popular lettersheets, in this example unused with a blank verso.
