This is Ortelius' first map of Artois from Jacques Surhon's manuscript of 1554, which was not published for security reasons. Ortelius obtained the right to use it when Antwerp was independent for a short time. The map is beautifully engraved with rivers, forests, cities and villages, and richly embellished with two strapwork cartouches and a sailing ship.
