This is plate 6 from this work that illustrates the exquisite gardens in Versailles. This plate shows the grounds of the Petit Trianon that were designed by Claude and Antoine Richards for Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV. Queen Marie-Antoinette received the Petit Trianon as a gift from Louis XVI and commissioned the count of Caraman to create an Anglo-Chinese garden there. Caraman's plans were adopted and the execution of the project was entrusted to Richard Mique, the queen's architect, and to the Richards. The gardens included exotic plants from around the world and remain an inspiration of formal garden design to the present day.
