This is a fine, rare map of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The unusual orientation takes full advantage of the paper size by presenting the island with north in the upper right corner so the equator cuts diagonally through the map. The map locates the important trade centers in both Sumatra and Malaysia, including Atchem (Aceh), Palimbam (Palembang), Malacca and Ihor (Johore). These centers were of interest to the Dutch in the later part of the seventeenth century when the VOC began to dominate trade in the region. Singapore itself is not shown, but the strategically important Straet van Sincapura is located. The title is enclosed in a unique cartouche design.
