This complete four volume set by John Campbell is an extensive history of the British Navy up to and including part of the Revolutionary War against the colonies. There are 6 fold-out maps by John Lodge of the five continents and the West Indies. Each of the four volumes has a beautifully engraved front piece with Britannia and other mythological figures. Written under the inspection of Doctor Berkenhout and published from Edinburgh. Printed for Alexander Donaldson. Bound in the original polished leather with gilded raised rib spines with fancy tooling and gilt red leather labels. Vol. I 578pp; Vol. II 558pp; Vol. III 520pp ; Vol. IV 521pp.

This set is complete with the six large folding maps: "A New Map of North America, from the best Authorities, by John Lodge." A few spots otherwise very good (B+). "A New Map of the West Indies, from the best Authorities, by John Lodge." Some offsetting (B). "A New Map of Europe, from the best Authorities, by John Lodge." Binding trim tear, closed on verso with archival tape. "A New Map of Asia, from the best Authorities, by John Lodge." A little toning in upper portion (B+). "A New Map of Africa, from the best Authorities, by John Lodge." Very nice example (A). "A New Map of South America, from the best Authorities, by John Lodge." A few spots or toning (B).

Condition: B+

The covers have some wear and three spines were split but professionally laid back together at some time in the past. There is occasional foxing inside and each volume has a private bookplate on the inside cover.
