This lot is from Frezier's important account (A Voyage to the South Sea, and Along the Coast of Chile and Peru…1712-14). Frezier, a lieutenant-colonel of the French Army Intelligence Corps, was dispatched to South America to make hydrographical observations, correct existing charts, and prepare exact plans of the most important ports and fortresses along the coasts. His work, much of it gathered while he disguised himself has a trader, provided France with invaluable information on the Spanish fortifications. Frezier is probably best know today for introducing the Fragaria Chiloensis (beach strawberry) to Europe and his drawing of it is included in this lot.
