This is a very scarce, complete volume, titled Orbis Terrarum Veteribus Cogniti Typus, on ancient geography. It contains two, folding world maps (16 x 12") of the same title (Orbis Terrarum Veteribus Cogniti Tabula) and printed from the same copper plate. One shows the continents of Europe Africa and Asia in outline form with only mountains, rivers and lakes delineated. Shirley calls this map a proof copy; but it appears more likely to be designed for comparison with the other map that contains the ancient regions and place names. The text consists of a six page introduction by Johannes Buno (Bunonis) and a geographical description by Joanne Strubio (Strubius). Rebound in vellum boards with gold embossed leather label on front cover with marbled paper end papers, probably late 19th century.
References: Shirley #434.
Condition: B+
Map and text toned with some offsetting. Boards are a bit warped, else very good.
