This striking title page is from the first Dutch edition of Flavius Josephus' history of the Jewish War (AD 66-73). It was engraved by the famous Dutch brothers Jan and Kaspar Luyken. The central image is a dramatic rendition of the destruction of the Temple by Roman soldiers with a shackled maiden in the foreground beside an abandoned high priest's vestments. Six small vignettes illustrate important events in Jewish history; at upper center is a view of the earth as the center of the universe.
