Boldly engraved, close-up plan of the central portion of the city of Batavia (Jakarta), the Dutch colonial capital and home to the Dutch East Indies Company. The city is built in the Dutch tradition with a large network of canals. The city plan is oriented with north to the left by a large compass rose. Important buildings and places are located by two extensive keys. Batavia was the capital of the Dutch trading empire during the period when they dominated trade from the famous Spice Islands.
