This is a very nice example of Colton's large wall map that includes all of the United States and Mexico and part of Canada. Wheat states that this new edition "creditably incorporates some of the latest information, including the new geography given to the world of cartography by the Stansbury maps of 1852." The map features interesting western territorial borders. This early 1853 edition does not show Washington Territory, which was formed in the year of publication. The entire Northwest is a large Oregon Territory that extends to the Continental Divide. It is bounded to the east by Northwest Territory, which in turn has the oversized Nebraska Territory to its south. Further east, Northwest Territory continues to Minnesota Territory at the Missouri River. Utah Territory fills the huge area between California and Nebraska Territory. The large New Mexico Territory includes all of today's Arizona, borders Nebraska Territory and features a pre-Gadsden Purchase southern boundary along the Gila River with Mexico. Three insets show Newfoundland, the southwestern part of the West Indies, and a large map of Central America. A table gives the "Statistics of the United States." Embellished with decorative borders with corner elements. Both rollers are present and attached. This example is in much finer condition than the map is normally found.
