Hitchcock's landmark geological map of the United State and southern Canada was published between 1853 and 1856 with no changes. The eastern portion of the map is a compilation of Lyell’s map with the western geology from M. Boue’s “Geological Map of the World”, modified by the author’s generalizations. This map provides early detail of the geological formations. An explanatory key to the colors indicates fifteen geological formations. Lithographed by W.O. Sharps Lith., Boston. This map was published in Outline of the Geology of the Globe, and of the United States in Particular..., by Edward Hitchcock, published in Boston by the Phillips, Sampson & Company.

Very nice impression and fine original hand color. The majority of the map images is very good, but there are a few stains, mostly along left edge, likely from where mounted in the book. Also little paper edge roughness at upper left.
