Jacquin's illustrations of the rare plants in the botanic garden of the University of Vienna is one of the most beautiful botanical works of the 18th century and the highlight of Austrian botany. Jacquin was a professor of botany and chemistry at the university and the director of the university gardens. He employed several notable botanical artists including Ferdinand and Francis Bauer, Francis Scheidl, Joseph Hofbauer and Johannes Scharft. These two plates show African daisies, Arctotis grandiflora and Arctotis paniculata, that had recently been introduced in Europe from South Africa.
