This report and map describe the topography, geology, agriculture, and minerals and mines of the area crossed by the railroad line. The railroad line was to be built from St. Louis to the western boundary of the state. One of Missouri's senators at the time, Thomas Benton, was a huge proponent in the expansionist movement and played a key role in securing funding for the transcontinental project. Included with the 93 pp. report are 2 steel engravings and the map titled Geological Map of South-West Branch, Pacific Rail Road by George C.. Swallow, Missouri’s first State Geologist. It was published by George Knapp & Co, St. Louis.

Map is in very good condition with very light toning and a few small stains in the margin. The report is in good condition with the edges of the pages being slightly tattered but generally clean. There is some minor loss in the spine but still intact.
