This lovely bird's-eye scene of Lisbon, viewed from the Tagus River, shows the city as it was before the 1755 earthquake that leveled much of the older parts of the city. The streets are filled with minutely engraved buildings; 34 points of interest are keyed to a table below. An astonishing variety of ships and boats parade across the foreground. The title is flanked by the coat of arms of Portugal at left and the coat of arms of Lisbon at right. This is Van der Aa’s edition of Jansson’s plate that was based on Matthaus Merian's view of the same name.
