This map was published in a fascinating British encyclopedia in which "the whole circle of human learning is explained," covering subject areas from agriculture and architecture to surgery and theology. The book was written by Rev. Temple Henry Croker, Dr. Thomas Williams, Samuel Clark, and "seven gentlemen particularly conversant in the Arts or Sciences they have undertaken to explain." This engraving was used to demonstrate various features of maps and their possible projections. The Island of California is clearly delineated, and North America bulges out towards the northwest. Australia, New Zealand and many of the South Pacific islands remain unexplored.
