A. Athanasii Kircheri E Soc. Jesu Mundus Subterraneus. Decorative title page from this interesting early compilation of semi-scientific knowledge about the physical features of the world. Flanking the title are the muses of geography and astronomy. Published by Jansson-Waesberg. Condition: Minor toning, with paper damage in left margin which includes image loss in upper-left corner. (C+)
B. Athanasii Kircheri E Soc. Jesu Mundi Subterranei Tomus II. This title page centers on a seated female figure, who appears to be Clio, the muse of History, studying ancient writings. Beside her stand Mercury, with his winged feet, winged hat and caduceus, and an angel. Clio is being shown a portrait of Stadtholder William III of Orange by a putto. Behind them stands a statue of Artemis of Ephesus (also known as Diana of Ephesus). The view through the window shows a working mine. Condition: Some light soiling in blank margins. (A)
