This detailed plan of Vienna shows the fortified city and the surrounding areas along the Wien and Danube rivers. Prior to the great Battle of Vienna (1683) between the Austrian Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire, the Viennese demolished the houses around the city walls and cleared the debris, leaving an empty plain that would expose the Turks to defensive fire. This cleared area, or esplanade, around the central city is still very visible. At left is a key to 41 different locations.
