C) America Explored by Adrian Johnson, published 1974, printed color, (10.5 x 14"). 254 pp. with 350 illustrations, a few of which are in color. Hardbound in brown faux-leather and illustrated paper covers. Condition - pages are clean and bright while the spine has almost perished. The paper covers are worn and chipped along the edges. (C)

This book has a two-fold fascination: it traces the development of cartography from the maps and charts of medieval travelers, who filled the unknown areas of their maps with drawings of sea monsters and sailing ships, to the scientifically accurate and highly sophisticated charts of l8th and l9th century surveyors; and it is the story of how Europe discovered and explored the rest of the world. 8vo, 337 pp., with 219 illustrations. Hard bound in white cloth with printed title on spine. Condition: Covers and spine show some minor signs of wear. (B+)

Seventeen authorities have written on their specialties, including vessels of the ancient world, Viking longships, steamships, ceremonial barges, Mississippi river craft, charts and maps, navigational instruments, figureheads, decorative rope, ship models, scrimshaw, and maritime art of Americas and the Pacific Ocean. 296 pp. with hundreds of illustrations, some in color. Hardbound in blue cloth covers and paper covers with gilt embossed cover and gilt title on spine. Condition - the paper covers and boards show some light wear. (B+)
F) Great Voyages of Discovery - Circumnavigators and Scientists 1764-1843 by Fernand Braudel, published 1983, printed color, (10 x 13"). This book brings to life the great circumnavigations that reached their zenith between 1764 and 1843, including Cook and Darwin. 232 pp. with numerous illustrations, many of which are in color. Hardbound in black cloth with gilt title on front cover and spine. Condition - Excellent . (A+)
