This scarce, large map depicts this Greek island located off the coast of Turkey. Two insets of nearby Nicaria (Icaria) and Patmos are enclosed in decorative cartouches. The island is profusely illustrated with graphic representations of forests, villages, castles, mountains and roads. An elaborate dedication to Prince Lebrecht of Anhalt is topped with an especially elaborate coat of arms. In the upper left corner, a large vignette of Joseph Georgirene, Archbishop of Samos, attended by three putti, completes the composition. The sheet is further decorated with a compass rose and several small sailing ships.
