This portrait of Johann Baptist Homann depicts the great cartographer sitting in a library, with a map of Germany before him. Engraved by Johann Wilhelm Winter after the portrait by Johann Kenckel, an employee of neighboring publisher and engraver Christoph Weigel. Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a German geographer and cartographer. In 1715 Homann was appointed Imperial Geographer of the Holy Roman Empire, as well as a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Shortly thereafter, Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World).
