This rare and fascinating report resulted from an act of Congress in 1873 authorizing a government-funded feasibility study for irrigating the "Great Valley of California." The report defines the Great Valley as the area between California's coastal range of mountains on the west and the Sierra Nevada on the east, comprising the San Joaquin, Tulare, and Sacramento valleys. The five commissioners determined that California's distinct wet and dry seasons and the irregular levels of rainfall had a negative impact on agricultural production and that extensive irrigation of the valley would be a great benefit to the nation. 8vo in dark brown pebbled boards; 91 pp; 1 plate, and 6 folding maps (4 in printed color) including the large Map of the San Joaquin, Sacramento and Tulare Valleys (24 x 34").
