This map of the continent extends from the Mediterranean and eastern Africa in the west to Nova Guinea and Hollandia Nova in the east, which are depicted with incomplete coastlines. The map was created to illustrate the voyages of Francisco d'Almeida, a Portuguese nobleman, soldier and explorer who was appointed as the Portuguese Viceroy to India by King Manuel I. A decorative title cartouche cleverly obscures a large landmass to the east of Asia.
