This is a comprehensive report by the Director of the United States Geological Survey, describing the progress and discoveries made during 1882 and 1883. It includes 85 different illustrative maps (a few in printed color) and plates which cover the Hawaiian Islands, fossils and the Great Basin.

Text, maps and plates are very clean with some light, even age toning. There are notations in the front endpapers, the covers are almost detached somewhat worn, and the spine is nearly perished.
