This is a very uncommon map of the Banda Islands, part of the important Spice Islands of Indonesia. Until the mid-nineteenth century, the Banda Islands were the only source of the spices nutmeg and mace. Controlling production of these fine spices was a major motivation for the Dutch conquest of the islands in the 1621. The map shows the plantations, Dutch forts and an erupting volcano.
