This detailed bird's-eye plan of Colombo depicts the city during the siege of Colombo under the command of Dutch General Gerard Hulst in 1656. The port town was an important trading post and changed hands between the Portuguese, Dutch and British several times. This plan depicts the fortifications, batteries, military quarters, roads, etc. with a numbered key identifying locations. A simple compass rose orients the plan with north at the bottom. This plan was published in John Churchill's "A Collection of Voyages and Travels."
