This map shows the extensive shipping network of the United Fruit Company operated by its "Great White Fleet," bringing in tropical fruits from South and Central America to the United States and other international ports. The steamship routes in red highlight those operated by United Fruit, while the dashed red lines represent routes operated by other companies. The density of the routes in the Caribbean indicate how critical the fruit industry is to these countries, many of which later came to be known as "banana republics" due to the company's heavy dominance in these markets. At lower left is an inset of South America showing the routes operated on the western side of the continent. Published by J.W. Clement Co., Matthews-Northrup Works, Buffalo, N.Y.
