This simple world map appeared in a translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses by Lodovico Dolce (1508 - 1556), an Italian humanist, theorist, and translator of the classics. The area between the northern and southern hemispheres is left blank and labeled zona torrida inhabitabile. North America is labeled Terra del Bacalaosa and Nueva Hispania. The southern tips of South America and Africa are depicted with the Strait of Magellan named and separating a southern continent named zona australe inhabitae. Eight wind heads surround the map. On a full sheet of Italian text (6.2 x 8.6") with Italian text on verso.
