This detailed street map of the District of Columbia, produced by the Board of Public Works, shows the road improvements in the District. A colored key at bottom indicates which roads have been improved by concrete, wood, and stone. The remaining uncolored streets indicate that they are still made of dirt. Lithographed by J.F. Gedney.
This chart was produced under the direction of Alexander Robey Shepherd, also known as "Boss Shepherd". He was the head of the powerful Board of Public Works from 1871-73, and was Governor of the District of Columbia from 1873-74. He is known by some as the "Father of Modern Washington."
