Victor Levasseur's "Atlas National Illustre" and "Atlas Universel Illustre" are among the last decorative atlases published. The maps are all lavishly illustrated with scenes of the countryside, products and activities indigenous to the region.

Provencal wine comes from the Var department of southeastern France. The Romans called the area nostra provincia (our province), which gave the region its more familiar name. Throughout the region's history, viticulture and winemaking has been influenced by the cultures that have ruled over the region including the Greeks, Romans, Carolingians, Catalans, Savoys and the Sardinians. This diverse influence left a legacy in the large variety of grapes that are used to make Provencal wine. Today the region is known predominately for its rose wine and the newer spicy, full flavored red wines of the Cotes de Provence. This area extends from the alpine hills near Draguignan to the coast of Saint-Tropez. It is home to the fourteen crus estates classified as the region’s premier wine estates. A terrific map for the wine connoisseur.
