Victor Levasseur's "Atlas National Illustre" and "Atlas Universel Illustre" are among the last decorative atlases published. The maps are all lavishly illustrated with scenes of the countryside, products and activities indigenous to the region.

The Nièvre is the least populated region of Burgundy and is more renowned for its oak forests that produce the consistently tight-grained wood that is prized by winemakers for barrels. However, this peaceful and tranquil department has a diverse range of landscapes. The east contains part of the Morvan mountain range, considered one of France's most picturesque areas, the center and north of the department is largely made up of limestone plateaus, and the south-westerly portion contains expansive plains around the Loire and Allier river valleys. Nièvre is well known for its white wine, Pouilly Fumé. The vineyards are scattered around villages including Pouilly-Sur-Loire, which lends its name to the appellation, Tracy sur Loire, Boisgibault, Saint Andelain. A terrific map for the wine connoisseur.
