Dr. Playfair (1738-1819), was a minister, historiographer to the Prince of Wales, and Principal of the United College of St Salvator and St Leonard in the University of St Andrews from 1799 until his death. This map was published in Playfair's System of Geography, Ancient and Modern and A New General Atlas, both of which are quite scarce. This detailed map of the islands in the South Pacific extends to include the northeast coast of Australia. Engraved by Samuel John Neele and published by T. Underwood.
