This unusual globe features a double-umbrella opening mechanism that reveals a 12-inch terrestrial globe when fully extended. The opening mechanism was patented in 1898 by William Goldthwaite in Chicago and updated to 1902. The detailed map shows political boundaries, rivers, isothermal lines, currents, and a large analemma in the Pacific Ocean. The globe is constructed of satin, mounted over a wire frame with a cherry handle and arm. Complete in original green cloth carrying case with leather handle.

There are several small separations in the satin, confined mostly to the oceans, with some wear along the wire frame. Carrying case is moderately worn, with the top of the folding case nearly separated.
