This map of the Strait of Gibraltar was created to show British readers the area surrounding the British enclave of Gibraltar, established in 1704. Gibraltar became a prominent British naval base, but was subject to many sieges by the Spanish. The Great Siege of Gibraltar, which began in 1779, was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the American War of Independence. At the time this map was published, a British fleet was sailing to relieve Gibraltar, while Spanish fleets were stationed at Cadiz. The British successfully defended the territory, which ended in 1783 with peace agreements. Published by John Bew.
